About the event

Join WFT's CEO, ecologist Neil Clennell, on a guided walk around Gibbets Close Hill, our exciting new nature reserve and habitat restoration project.

At the moment the site is not freely open to the public, so this is your chance to see it early in its rewilding journey and learn about the cutting-edge ecological research being done here to combat biodiversity loss. You will also be able to see the initial phase of a major wetland creation project in progress.

It is also a great opportunity to enjoy a walk in the heart of the Cotswolds in this very special place, home to a wide variety of wildlife including bats, barn owls and some magnificent veteran oak trees, and with spectacular views from the top of the hill.

There will also be the opportunity to ask Neil questions about habitat restoration, natural regeneration or any other aspect of the rewilding process as you go around the site.

ABOUT NEIL:

Neil has 30 years’ professional experience working for threatened species and habitat conservation in the UK and abroad. Although a committed herpetologist from an early age, he is also an all-round natural historian and an experienced landscape ecologist. At Wychwood Forest Trust, Neil has introduced a number of projects to trial a more ‘nature-led’ approach to habitat creation and repair.

HOW TO FIND US:

Approaching via the A40 from the Oxford direction: after joining the B4022 Oxford Hill into Witney, the entrance to Gibbets Close Hill nature reserve is on your right through a five bar gate, opposite the signposted entrance to Windrush cemetery on the left (about 100m before the traffic lights at the crossroads). Approaching in the opposite direction from Witney, the site is then on the left after the Oxford Hill crossroads. The entrance to the site will be marked with a WFT flag and you will be met in the farmyard.
