A big thank you to @witneytc for inviting us to have a display in their Community Window during November.

It's a great way to share a little of who we are and what we do with residents and visitors to the town. We've had some fab feedback.

Although it was chilly, the sun came out at Foxburrow today. Some of our regular volunteers and friends gathered to say goodbye to Toby. We had tea and cake and toasted Toby’s seven years with the Wychwood Forest Trust. Thank you for all your hard work from all of us and we wish you all the very best for the future! We will miss you Toby!

We say goodbye to Toby this week who is going on to pastures new after 7 years at WFT.

There will be a little gathering at Foxburrow on Thursday with tea and cake round the campfire.

The carrion table at Gibbets Close Hill is taking shape thank to our dedicated volunteers who are willing to get stuck in even on a snowy day!

This lovely little fella was snapped by Shaun Hancox on our Gibbets Close Hill reserve. Shaun won first prize in our annual photo competition, and 'Young Robin' is the cover star of our 2025 calendar.

Our AGM on Saturday was a great success. Neil spoke about our achievements this year and handed out the prizes for the photo competition - well done to Shaun and Denis!

We were delighted to have the naturalist and best-selling author Stephen Moss as our guest speaker and he gave a really engaging talk about the loss of biodiversity and in particular how bird species have been affected. It prompted a lively discussion afterwards.

We had a delicious lunch laid on by the wonderful team @realfarmed. It is always such a pleasure to be hosted at their beautiful venue - thank you so much for taking such good care of all our guests.

And a huge thank you to Stephen as well, who took us on a brisk bird walk in the afternoon - a lovely end to the day.

Neil explained what we do, our approach to nature conservation and habitat restoration, and a little about our exciting rewilding and research projects at Gibbets Close Hill. We are looking forward to welcoming @bridewellgardens for a guided walk to the site soon.

Great to see the carrion table at Gibbets slowly taking shape, thanks to Toby and the volunteers. All 4 legs have been dug in and appropriately adorned! Next it is on to the platform which will form the table top.

There are several biological factors that probably limit the rate at which landscapes can begin to repair themselves by natural ecological processes. One of these is the comparative lack of ‘dead things’ in modified countryside compared to more pristine environments.

There are a myriad of creatures that specialise in clearing up death and decay, from the microscopic to the vultures, and keeping them busy and well-fed is actually the cornerstone of healthy food webs and ecosystems.

Leaving roadkill on the carrion table will be the nearest we can manage to simulating an important biological process that can't re-establish itself by natural means at any significant scale in the wider landscape any time in the near future.

This is part of a project to investigate the effects of sporadic, glut-and-famine carrion availability on the recovery of the wider species assemblage over time, not just on the obvious scavengers. Over the coming years we will monitor population changes of certain indicator species that should benefit indirectly from the increased biomass of detritivores.

Toby was out on Saturday training volunteer hedgelayers again, this time as part of @wild_oxfordshire's Hedgerow Heroes campaign, which we are pleased to support.

The group laid 10m of hedge along Jubilee Way in Witney. Well done everyone!

We hope you will support the March for Clean Water if you can.

It is widely known that not a single river in England is in good overall health - how can we possibly hope to restore nature and increase biodiversity with polluted waters?

We can't, but we can speak up and press for change. We should take heart in knowing that it only takes 3.5% of the population to shift the political agenda, and in knowing peaceful protest is more likely to succeed, take opportunity to have the issue heard by the new government.

ALL of the top environment and nature charities/groups are supporting this walk and their combined message is clear; by flooding the streets the new government will see that clean rivers and drinking water must be a top priority for them.

Rest assured, this will be a family friendly event, a great way to network with your wider river community and citizen scientists, and in general a really uplifting day. There will also be some great guest speakers at the event - more on their website.

How fantastic does the new cover look on the Foxburrow dome?

It was a real labour of love to replace the old wrecked covering with the new tarpaulin, but with the help of our friends @fatsquirreloutdoor we managed it. Big thanks too to our regular volunteers who helped neaten up the inside edges.

Now we just need some sunny days to really enjoy using it!

He reported that the ponds are all looking good with water holding in them all, which is great news! Some have more water than others at present, so it will be really interesting to watch them develop over the winter period as the ground is still very dry.

Can you imagine a future where NATURE has RIGHTS? What’s your part in this future?

'Nature Rights' unravels the story of humans’ relationship with Nature: from ancient times to the present day. Be part of a compelling journey and watch, read, question, talk, listen… and imagine a future where Nature has rights.

This is a participatory event, guided by artists and collaborators Flora Gregory and Natalie Koffman @gregoryandkoffman, friends of Wychwood Forest Trust, who are inspired and motivated in their individual and collaborative works by ecological and planetary concerns and a deeply felt personal connection to nature. They have been hosting and sharing 'Nature Rights' since 2018.

'Nature Rights' lasts approximately 4 hours, and offers a rare opportunity away from everyday life to consider important questions that can help shape and determine different ways of being in the world - how we might live more harmoniously with our planetary cohabitants and within planetary means. Can you imagine a future where NATURE has RIGHTS? What’s your part in this future?

'Nature Rights' unravels the story of humans’ relationship with Nature: from ancient times to the present day. Be part of a compelling journey and watch, read, question, talk, listen… and imagine a future where Nature has rights.

This is a participatory event, guided by artists and collaborators Flora Gregory and Natalie Koffman @gregoryandkoffman, friends of Wychwood Forest Trust, who are inspired and motivated in their individual and collaborative works by ecological and planetary concerns and a deeply felt personal connection to nature. They have been hosting and sharing 'Nature Rights' since 2018.

'Nature Rights' lasts approximately 4 hours, and offers a rare opportunity away from everyday life to consider important questions that can help shape and determine different ways of being in the world - how we might live more harmoniously with our planetary cohabitants and within planetary means. The Wychwood Flora Group does really important work monitoring the populations of rare plants in West Oxfordshire, including meadow clary, downy woundwort, Cotswold pennycress, red hemp-nettle, and yellow star of Bethlehem.

They conduct surveys on behalf of the National Plant Monitoring Scheme, the Evenlode Catchment Partnership and others, and see an amazing variety of plants on the limestone grassland in this area. They also do some habitat management work and run work parties.

It is really sad that over the last few months we have experienced a spate of vandalism to our new education area at Foxburrow Wood.

Despite putting up friendly notices asking people to respect the site and allow everyone to enjoy it, a few have consistently caused a lot of damage.

Notices have been defaced and broken, benches and tables broken up to make a cycle track, the roof of the dome structure has been slashed, and this week a portion of the fence by the carpark with the Foxburrow sign was torn down.

Our partners Fat Squirrel Outdoor @fatsquirreloutdoor who use the education area have had their equipment broken and burnt.

It is a shame that this beautiful and popular nature reserve is being targeted by a mindless few.

As a small nature conservation charity, we do not have the funds to keep on repairing the damage that is being done. Our aim is to look after nature for all the community to enjoy and we welcome everyone to Foxburrow. We do not want to have to consider closing the reserve for periods if the vandalism continues.

The police are now looking in to this and we will work with them to find a solution. If anyone has any helpful information, do please contact us by email at info@wychwoodforesttrust.co.uk to report it.

CCTV cameras will be installed in the near future and regular patrols of the area are already underway.

Let's hope that the few people who are spoiling this wonderful place rethink how their actions might affect the rest of the community and the wildlife who call Foxburrow home.
